Outsiders have called Anacandra, “a catch basin for the evil humans who never quite escaped from the Godelves,” but those who live there call the wooden walls of Anacandra, “the only place where we will know peace.” Anacandrans were descended from the humans who were loyal to or worshipped the God Elves. While other humans participated in or started rebellions, it is said that the servant Anacandra and his family helped the God Elves root out centers of opposition through trickery and spying.
When the God Elves were finally defeated and the good races made their escape, Anacandra led his people away as well. They traveled south as far as they could until they encountered opposition from the armies of the Icenglades. The warriors within the Icenglade columns had heard of the treachery of humans under the lead of Anacandra and refused to let him and his people pass any further south. When the war beasts of the God Elves caught up to them the Anacandrans felt they would be slaughtered for they could run no more. It was the Ogres that came to their rescue. It has been described as if the forest itself had moved to their aid. Once the war beasts were dead, the Ogres would have nothing more to do with them.
Anacandra began building his city there and soon was known as the Black King. He cursed the Icenglades loudly and at every opportunity. He set up baronies and played power games with the lives of the people who followed him well into his old age. He was assassinated by his own son, who was later disposed of by the people but came back to take power. Anacandra is now a large city, built out of wood and mortar which decays due to age and negligence. The people are poor and the barons are rich. Power struggles and lineage wars ensue in the nicer areas, while brawls and thieves breed like rats in the worse ones. Each baron has a military made up of many of the city's peasants. The king mints his own coins which are unwelcome in the lands outside of Anacandra.
Most Anacandrans have a dislike of other humans, especially Icelanders feeling that they were mistreated and downtrodden by their brethren. Those who have tried to help an Anacandran have often found themselves betrayed, cursing their stupidity with their last gurgling, bloodied words.
