Breadth

Breadth is known as the Ghost Town of the East. Back in its heyday, it was a stopover for travelers of the Dwarven train until a small earthquake ruptured the tracks which had run south of Breadth. A large valley was created and the train engineers found it easier to build a switching station to the east than to lay track down into the valley and back up it, let alone modify the trains to climb high hills. Since extra train tracks have been built to the east and then to the north following the old stone road, there is little traffic through Breadth. Though many trains do come through the city, however they rarely ever stop. Since the people there have no other place to go, they have formed their own secluded economy and ways of life. The main city of Breadth is built from wood, which is found in abundance in the surrounding forests. The various stores and shops housed in Breadth cater to the needs of people living in the city and outlying areas and don’t often see travelers. As such, they usually only stock goods that fill the necessities of life for the townsfolk. If something special is needed, they send requests for goods to Bavenaack and the train stops to unload boxes. On average this happens on only 1 out of every 15 trips. The only thing Breadth is known for these days is the cattle and indrik that they raise. Since the train doesn’t stop there often, these herds are usually driven north or west. If they board the train at all, it is at Bavenaack or Venture.

In contrast to the inactivity of Breadth, the switching station to the east of Breadth has been built up to accommodate the needs of travelers alone. It contains 4 hotels which are almost always full, a few taverns for layover drinks, and a row of shops which cater to the needs of those rich enough to ride the train. All of these buildings are connected and held behind a stone wall with only two small doors out to the rest of the world and gates for the train to pass through. These gates can only be opened from the inside of the switching station or by the electricity which bleeds off the train into the tracks as it passes over a switch plate located outside of the station.
