In the woods of western Ithis, where trees grow tall; ancient rivers cut deep ravines throughout the lands. Those, vigilant and keen of eye, may catch a glimpse of what are rumored to be the greatest rangers the lands have ever seen. Called the rangers of Fengclaw, they command the respect of every ranger throughout the lands, even the Elven rangers of Wildermeet. These rangers are unaffiliated with any lord or land, but keep their wooded home place a secret. Some say that these rangers are hermits who never meet but once a year in a secret wooded glen shielded by the fey creatures themselves. Some claim these rangers possess druidic powers and live as beasts for most of the time, only begrudgingly taking human form when the need arises. However the most compelling tale told of these rangers comes from a young girl by the name of Maria.
Maria had lost herself in the woods near Paschal one sunny day, and as the night descended she fell down a ravine. Her leg injured so she could not walk, she sent loud wailing cries through the forest. Soon she found herself surrounded by large beasts. Tall as bears she said they were—dark fur bristling in the moonlight. Some bore the faces of wolves and dogs while some bore the faces of other animals. She thought they were Animalia—but no—they were too large and wore no clothing, save a few shreds of torn cloth. They carried her off and gave her a drink; she slept the rest of the night. When she woke she was in a woodland village, being tended to by the village healers. The village was made up of the Fengclaw rangers. They helped her heal and then blindfolded her. They led her out of the forest and back to the edges of her hometown. Her home villagers who saw her walking back claimed that they saw her being escorted by two giant wolf Animalia, who have not been seen since the War of the Fangs.
